On November 11th, at the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month, the community came together at Joseph Bannon Park for Emery Village’s 12th annual Remembrance Day ceremony. Despite the cool, cloudy weather, the rain held off, allowing residents to gather in honour of veterans and those currently serving.
This year, the event saw senior staff from 31 Division, including Superintendent Mandeep (Manny) Mann, Staff Sergeant Peter Wallace, and Community Officer Melody Cooper attend. With fellow officers in uniform, Superintendent Mann led a moving “Present Arms” command during a minute of silence.
Representation from the military, including an ex-military member who is now a judge in Ontario and other veterans added to the moment. Their presence reminded everyone of the sacrifices that ensure our freedoms.
The ceremony was enriched by the participation of St. Basil-the-Great College School’s Grade 10 history class, adding a younger generation to the observance. Principal Jessica Wlodarczyk made it possible, with Trustee Ida Li Pretti helping coordinate their attendance.
The Bannon family was also present, and both Superintendent Mann and Emery Village Voice Publisher Sean Delaney spoke about Joseph Bannon’s legacy.
We were honoured to have three levels of government represented at the event. MP Judy Sgro delivered a heartfelt message.
“On Remembrance Day, we honour the brave men and women who have served and sacrificed for our freedom. Their courage and dedication remind us of the true cost of peace. As we observe this solemn day, let us reflect on their legacy and express our deepest gratitude. We remember their stories and the lessons they have given to us. May we continue to strive for a world where their sacrifices are never forgotten.”
MPP Tom Rakocevic shared his pride in the day’s events.
“I am so proud to see students from our community participating in our local annual Remembrance Day Ceremony at Joseph Bannon Park. Their presence ensures that the next generation contemplates and remembers the ultimate sacrifice that was paid by so many for our freedom that we should never take it for granted. On behalf of our community, I thank the Emery Village BIA, Emery Village Voice and all organizers and volunteers, and I offer my deepest respect to our Canadian Armed Forces and their families.”
Councillor Anthony Perruzza delivered a thoughtful message, reflecting on his own history teacher’s wisdom.
“History often repeats itself through war and suffering. It’s our responsibility to remember the past and honour those who have served to protect our freedoms. By remembering, we show gratitude and help to build a better future. Let us stay vigilant and strive for peace in a world where conflicts persist.”
The ceremony concluded with wreaths being laid by Councillor Perruzza, Trustee Matias de Dovitiis, and MPP Rakocevic, along with a representative from MP Sgro’s office.
Afterward, attendees enjoyed a light lunch, coffee, and dessert, hosted by the Emery Village BIA. A special thanks to Sandra Farina, Al Ruggero, and BIA Board Director, Anthony Tersigni for their support. It was great to see former BIA Chair Tim Lambrinos again this year, bringing along his fascinating World War II family memorabilia.
We’d like to thank everyone who attended and helped make this day special. On behalf of the Emery Village BIA and the Emery Village Voice, I extend an open invitation to join us again next year, on November 11th, 2025. Let’s continue to honour our heroes and keep their legacy alive.
Thank you, Emery Village, for showing once again what a truly united community looks like.
