As we head toward the April 28th federal by-election in Humber River–Black Creek, long-time Member of Parliament Judy Sgro is once again seeking your vote to continue representing our riding in Ottawa. With deep roots in the community and over two decades of service, Judy brings experience, passion, and a progressive approach to tackling today’s pressing issues.
Judy Sgro has proudly served as MP since 1999. During that time, she has worked to bring millions of dollars into the riding each year. One standout example is the Canada Child Benefit, which brings in approximately $14 million annually to support local families. “It’s made a huge difference. Families aren’t looking for donated school bags anymore. They can buy their own,” she explained.
She also highlights the 10% increase for seniors over 75, part of a broader effort to address the affordability crisis. In her words, “There’s been a lot of money coming into this riding in different ways, and I’m very proud of that.”
Judy is especially proud of recent healthcare investments like Pharmacare for diabetes medications and the expansion of dental care for seniors and children. “An 83-year-old woman called me to say she hadn’t been to the dentist since she was 11. She just had $3,000 worth of dental work done. That’s life-changing.”
If re-elected, Sgro says her top priority is clear: Housing. She believes in building a mix of affordable homes, small starter houses, and co-operative housing to meet the needs of the riding. She also champions her National Eye Care Strategy, a rare private member’s bill that passed through both Houses of Parliament. “It will help prevent blindness and invest in research for macular degeneration.”
On the international front, Judy has expressed concern about rising protectionism from the U.S., especially under Donald Trump. “Local businesses here are already feeling the squeeze. I’m running again to help fight back against policies that hurt Canadians.”
Asked about her guiding principles, Judy says it comes down to trust. “People that know me, trust me. I never want to let them down. That’s why I’m running again. It’s about helping people, protecting our country, and using my 25 years of experience to fight for this community.”
