The first weeks of school bring a sudden change to Emery’s streets. Sidewalks become busier, crossing guards return to key intersections and drivers once again share morning and afternoon routes with children who may be walking, cycling or getting off a school bus.
The most important step for drivers is simple: slow down and expect movement near every school. Obey posted limits, flashing beacons and crossing guards, and avoid distracted driving. Do not stop in crosswalks, bike lanes or places that block a child’s view of traffic. When a school bus displays flashing red lights and its stop arm, traffic approaching from either direction must stop unless the roadway is divided by a median.
Parents and caregivers can help by choosing a consistent drop-off location that does not require unsafe turns or double parking. Where possible, walking part of the route can reduce congestion immediately around a school entrance. Children should be reminded to cross at marked locations, make eye contact with drivers and avoid stepping between parked vehicles.
Toronto’s Vision Zero program uses school-zone signs, pavement markings, flashing beacons, zebra crossings and other measures to improve visibility. Infrastructure helps, but attention remains essential. A few patient seconds behind the wheel can protect a neighbour and help every Emery student begin the school year safely.
