Kindness in action – Emery

There’s a new wave of compassion taking root in our community, and it’s being led by Xania Pagliaroli, founder of the OHANA Love Initiative. This young university graduate is determined to make life brighter for local seniors through small but meaningful acts of kindness — and she’s inviting Emery residents to join her.

“The idea started in September 2024,” Xania explained. “I reached out to a few senior homes in Humber River–Black Creek to see if they’d be interested in a winter event. My goal was simple — to raise enough donations so every senior would receive a personalized gift.”

The inspiration came from her grandfather, a longtime minister with the Salvation Army who spent his life helping others. “He cared for people right up until he was 82,” she said. “That spirit of giving stayed with me.” Another spark came years earlier, when she and her mother donated teddy bears to children at SickKids Hospital. “Seeing how much happiness that small gesture brought really stuck with me. I wanted to recreate that joy for seniors who might be feeling alone, especially during the winter.”

The OHANA Love Initiative brings students and seniors together through what Xania calls intergenerational programming. Students earn volunteer hours while helping plan, set up, and take part in activities such as bingo nights, sip-and-paint afternoons, and music socials. “It’s about connection,” she said. “Many seniors don’t have family nearby. Spending time with them — listening, laughing, and creating — means the world.”

The group’s biggest event of the year will be its Christmas celebration, where Xania hopes to collect teddy bears and stuffed animals for every senior in attendance. Donations are already being accepted, and she encourages anyone with gently used or new items to contribute. Monetary donations or supplies like blankets and art materials are also welcome.

“What makes OHANA special,” she said, “is the simplicity. Just sitting beside someone, painting, or sharing a story can completely change their day — and yours.”

The next OHANA Love Christmas event is scheduled for mid-December, and plans are already underway for a Valentine’s Day program early next year.
