Keeping your alkalinity in an acidic world

By Kajal Chohan

Do you suffer from chronic conditions such as fatigue, allergies, indigestion, or pain?

If your current treatment regimens aren’t really helping you may have a pH imbalance. The body’s pH (potential of hydrogen), is a measure of acidity or alkalinity of the body’s fluids and tissues that is measured on a scale of 0 to 14. The pH value is heavily influenced by factors such as our environment, lifestyle and diet.

Generally, the human body is healthier in an alkaline or basic state rather than an acidic one. Under normal circumstances the chemicals, toxins and foods that enter our body are converted into acidic compounds which our body is able to eliminate in order to effectively maintain appropriate acid-base balance. However, persistent chemical and toxin exposure, combined with lack of exercise and a poor diet makes it difficult for the body to maintain a healthy alkaline state. This state encourages acids to accumulate in the body and produce inflammation, indigestion and pain. Having an unbalanced pH overtime can result in common chronic conditions such as osteoporosis, constipation, premature aging and yes, even weight gain.

So, if you’ve never gone alkaline now is the time! As we welcome the long awaited spring season our body is transitioning from hibernation and conservation mode to growth and elimination mode. This is the optimal time to cleanse our systems and remove any acidic accumulations in the body.

Here are a few easy tips to help you body restore alkalinity:

* Drink lemon water daily – Although lemons are an acidic fruit, once they are digested the end product is more alkaline in the human body.

* Reduce consumption of carbonated beverages such as cola and other soda drinks

* Reduce your consumption of meats and dairy as these foods are shockingly acidic

* Eat more vegetables, especially green leafy vegetables (spinach, kale, swiss chard)

For a more thorough cleanse speak to a Naturopathic doctor about a medically supervised detox program. Detoxification programs can range from three days to one month and can include lifestyle changes for more effective results. Reclaim your health and alkalinity this spring.
