Councillor’s Corner - Dec 2016

Dear Friends,

As some of you may be following, I have taken on Mayor John Tory and his introduction to ludicrous new taxes.

The Motor Vehicle Registration Tax, Parking Tax, Roof Tax, Hotel Room Tax, Road Toll Tax, Municipal Sales Tax, Municipal Income Tax and much more will all be on the table as Mayor Tory foolishly prepares to emulate Premier Kathleen Wynne’s tax policies at the municipal level.

The City routinely ventures into provincial areas of responsibility putting costs that should be shouldered by the Province squarely on the backs of Toronto taxpayers. This has got to stop.

During the December Council, there was a polarizing and contentious debate on the Road Toll Tax. I am disappointed that City Council has voted in favour of the Tory Toll cash grab.

Mayor Tory needs to open his eyes and realize that he has made life too expensive in Toronto. Torontonians can’t afford any of his new taxes. The DVP and the Gardiner are necessities for commuters. People need to go to work. These roads are far too important for this government to use as a cash-grab on hard-working commuters.

I feel that these new taxes and the underhanded way in which they are being implemented is totally unconscionable and I am proud to state that I will be voting against these and all other “revenue tools,” “revenue streams,” “City Building Funds,” “Behavioural Modification Instruments,” and, any other form of unwarranted gouging measure.

I am speaking up for the families, seniors and hardworking Torontonians who now have to pay for Mayor Tory’s waste and mismanagement.

I would also like to take this time to express my deepest gratitude at being given the opportunity to continue being your voice.

I am encouraged by the tremendous confidence you have shown in me - you have given me your mandate and I will carry it forward.

I wish you and your family a Merry Christmas, happy holiday and a prosperous and fortunate New Year!
