Skating into the New Year at Joseph Bannon Park

By Sean Delaney

There’s something special about starting a new year outdoors, surrounded by neighbours, families, and plenty of laughter. That spirit was on full display at a recent community skate hosted by Tom Rakocevic, right here at Joseph Bannon Park in Emery Village.

Although temperatures were a few degrees above zero, strong winds created a sharp wind chill, making it feel closer to minus 18. Even so, it didn’t slow anyone down. The turnout was terrific, with families and kids bundled up and making the most of a bright winter day. The rink was full of energy, laughter, and the familiar sound of skates cutting across the ice.

I’ll admit, it had been a while since I last laced up my skates. You’ll probably spot me in one of the photos—smiling, slightly unsteady, but enjoying every minute. The kids, on the other hand, were fearless, circling the rink with ease. Hot chocolate and donuts kept everyone warm, and the atmosphere felt relaxed, friendly, and very much about community.

A sincere thank you goes out to the community officers from 31 Division and to Tom’s staff, who helped keep the day running smoothly. Their support added to the event’s welcoming, family-friendly feel.

Days like this also highlight something many people may not realize: Joseph Bannon Park is home to a full artificial skating rink. It’s professionally maintained, complete with an ice-making system and a Zamboni to keep the surface in great shape—right here in our neighbourhood.

If you haven’t been skating yet this season, consider this your reminder. Check the City of Toronto website for regular skating hours, grab the family, and get outside. It’s a great way to stay active, lift spirits, and start 2026 on a positive note.
