A Father’s Day Reflection
By the time you’re reading this June edition of the Emery Village Voice, Father’s Day will have come and gone. But I didn’t want to let the moment pass without offering a few words of appreciation and reflection.
To all the fathers in our community—and beyond—I hope you were honoured in some way this Father’s Day. Whether through a backyard BBQ, a simple phone call, or a quiet moment together, the day is meant to shine a light on the often unsung role that fathers play.
Fathers can be teachers, protectors, providers, comedians, and at times, simply a reassuring presence. As they age, our relationships with them may evolve—sometimes deepening, sometimes becoming more complex. Not everyone has an easy relationship with their father, and for some, the day might bring a mix of emotions. But perhaps that’s exactly why Father’s Day matters. It gives us a moment to pause, to think, and to either celebrate the bond we have—or consider building one if there’s still time.
And that’s really the heart of it—time. It’s fleeting. Once it’s passed, you can’t get it back. We all get caught up in busy lives, and sometimes the chance to make a call, share a coffee, or say something meaningful slips by. But it’s never too early to plan for next year—or even better, the next ordinary day that doesn’t need a holiday to be special.
Whether your father is close by, far away, no longer with us, or someone you’re still learning to understand, take a moment to reflect. Honour him in your own way. And if you missed the day, it’s okay—showing love and appreciation doesn’t have to follow a calendar.
To all the dads—thank you. You matter more than words can say.
