Another year draws to a close and I’ve found myself reflecting on just how much quiet kindness surrounds us here in Emery Village — especially during the holiday season.
This year, I had the chance to see and take part in several toy and food drives alongside familiar faces like Councillor Anthony Perruzza and MPP Tom Rakocevic, and of course our own Emery Village Voice “Santa.”
Across our neighbourhood, food banks have received steady support, and many churches and community organizations have worked quietly behind the scenes to care for individuals and families who need a little extra help. Much of this work goes unseen, but it should never go unnoticed.
One recent visit that stayed with me was to the seniors’ residence at 22 Norfinch. I was welcomed by Xania Pegliaroli, who many of you will remember from an article we shared in October. Through her efforts, every resident received a special gift this Christmas. There was also caroling and a husband-and-wife team playing an electronic piano and filling the room with familiar songs.
As I looked around, I saw everything that makes this season so complex. Some residents were smiling and singing along. Others were quieter, perhaps missing loved ones or feeling the weight of the season. At one point, I held the hand of a woman who began to cry and gave her a hug. It was a small moment, but a meaningful one. This time of year can be joyful and tender all at once.
What these experiences reminded me of is this: when we step into volunteering, when we show up for others, something changes in us. Our hearts open. And often, one act of kindness leads to another.
As I close out the year, I want to share a hope for 2026. The Emery Village Voice has always focused on good news — that won’t change. But I would like the paper to become even more of a vessel for celebrating kindness in action. To shine a brighter light on the people, organizations, and everyday moments that are quietly building something good in our community.
If we can help tell those stories, and inspire more people to get involved, then we’re doing our job.
Wishing all Emery Village families a warm, peaceful holiday season and all the very best in the year ahead.
