Healthwise in Emery: Navigating Coughs, Colds, Flu, and more

By Shelly Harris BScn CCRN Rn-C

As we navigate the colder months in Emery Village, it’s common to hear more coughs and sniffles around us. This month’s edition of Healthwise in Emery is dedicated to understanding common respiratory ailments like coughs, colds, flu, RSV (respiratory syncytial virus), and pneumonia. It’s especially important for our senior community to be aware of these conditions and know how to stay healthy during this season.

Coughs and colds are usually the first sign that our bodies are fighting off an infection. While they are mostly mild, they can be uncomfortable and last for a week or two. The flu, on the other hand, is more than just a bad cold. It can be quite serious, especially for seniors, and can lead to complications like pneumonia – an infection that inflames the air sacs in one or more lungs.

RSV is another common respiratory virus that typically causes mild, cold-like symptoms. However, it can be severe in older adults, leading to a more serious infection like pneumonia or bronchiolitis, an inflammation of the small airways in the lung.

With all these potential ailments, it’s important for seniors to take extra care during the colder months. Here are some tips to stay healthy:

Get Vaccinated: Getting a flu shot every year is one of the best ways to protect against the flu. It’s also worth discussing with your doctor if you need a pneumonia vaccine.

Practice Good Hygiene: Regular handwashing with soap and water can prevent the spread of germs. Also, remember to cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze.

Stay Warm and Rested: Keeping warm can prevent colds and more serious issues like hypothermia. Make sure your home is heated to at least 18 to 21°C and get plenty of rest.

Eat Healthily and Stay Hydrated: A balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains can boost your immune system. Also, drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated.

Avoid Crowds During Peak Illness Seasons: If possible, avoid large gatherings or public places during the height of cold and flu season. This can reduce your risk of catching a virus.

Regular Check-Ups: Regular visits to your healthcare provider can help you stay on top of your health and catch any issues early.

Remember, while these tips are helpful, they are not a substitute for professional medical advice. If you’re feeling unwell or have concerns about your health, seeing your healthcare provider is important.

As we look after our health this season, let’s also remember to check on our neighbours and loved ones, especially those who are elderly or have underlying health conditions. A little care and attention can go a long way in keeping our community healthy and vibrant. Stay warm, stay safe, and let’s look out for each other here in Emery Village.
