Christmas magic in Humberlea, six years strong

By Sean Delaney

The festive spirit once again filled the streets of Emery Village as the Sixth Annual Humberlea Christmas Parade returned on a cold December evening, drawing hundreds of neighbours out of their homes and onto sidewalks to take part in a tradition that continues to grow in meaning each year.

What began six years ago as a simple act of kindness during the uncertainty of the pandemic has become a cherished community event. Parade organizer Brigette Contento reflected on those early days, saying, “When we started this, it was never intended to become something so big or to have such a beautiful impact on our community. It began during the difficult days of COVID, when so many people were struggling and feeling isolated. All we wanted was to bring a little light and joy.”

That first year was modest — a walk through the neighbourhood with a few decorated trucks, music playing, Santa waving hello, and our good neighbours at Safe Storage handing out knapsacks filled with mini panettones. It was simple, heartfelt, and exactly what people needed at the time.

This year, that same spirit carried the parade forward. Hundreds and hundreds of residents lined the route, many watching from their driveways and front steps with young children bundled up and waving as the parade passed by. Others joined in along the way, while smiling faces, laughter, and holiday cheer followed the procession from start to finish. The warmth in the crowd was impossible to miss and truly felt from the heart.

Snow angels braved the cold, Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus waved to families, and crowd favourite Michael Verrelli returned as a mischievous Grinch, delighting children and adults alike. A small holiday train carried children through the streets, a wonderful addition that quickly became a highlight of the evening. The Emery Village BIA also joined the celebration with a beautifully lit truck featuring Santa, adding even more sparkle along the route. I was happy to take part in the parade once again, sharing in a tradition that means so much to this community.

“Never in our wildest dreams did we imagine that small gesture would grow into an annual community tradition,” Contento shared. “Seeing families come out, children’s faces light up, and neighbours connect has been the greatest gift of all.”

Behind the scenes, the parade was made possible by countless volunteers and supporters. Thanks were extended to Bruna for her tireless preparations, to Cathy Petrolo and Paul for driving and providing the float trailer, to Anthony for the music, and to Joe Mandarino of Gigi Imports for the delicious cookies. Special thanks to Alessandra, Cora, and Lily for braving the cold as winter angels, and to the many volunteers who brought the magic to life.

Gratitude was also shared with members of Toronto Fire Services and 31 Division, whose officers, community policing teams, and the ever-popular Blinky helped ensure a safe and exciting evening for all. Warm thanks went to Sandra Farina, Executive Director of the Emery Village BIA, for providing hot chocolate and Timbits; to Anna, Kathy, Tash, and Natalie for preparing and serving refreshments; and to Deborah and Camilla for dressing the volunteers.

As Contento beautifully summed it up, “A small act of kindness has become a tradition rooted in unity, generosity, and love.” Six years on, the Humberlea Christmas Parade continues to light up Emery Village and remind us why this community is such a special place to call home.
