Heading into another season of unpredictable weather, residents of Emery Village need to keep a close eye on the Humber River. Known to swell its banks from Steeles Avenue down past Highway 401, this beautiful natural feature can quickly become a hazard, especially after heavy rains and during snowmelt upriver.
While the Humber River’s paths through our parks offer a picturesque escape into nature, safety should always come first. Parents, it’s particularly important to be vigilant and ensure that children are aware of the risks associated with a swollen river. With the spring thaw in full effect, the waters can rise unexpectedly, and what looks like a safe spot one day might be underwater the next.
Here are a few tips to keep your family safe while enjoying the outdoors:
Stay Informed: Regularly check updates from the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA) website. They provide valuable alerts and updates about water levels and safety advisories.
Keep a Safe Distance: Avoid the river’s edge, especially when the river is high or flowing rapidly. Ground conditions can be unstable and unpredictable.
Supervise Children: Always accompany young children near the river and hold onto them tightly. It only takes a moment for the soft banks to give way.
Heed Warnings: Obey any signs or barriers that restrict access to parts of the river. These are put in place for your safety.
Emery Village is proud of its scenic landscapes and outdoor spaces, but with the beauty of nature comes the responsibility to respect its power. By staying alert and prepared, we can ensure that our spring is not only enjoyable but also safe.
As the publisher of the Emery Village Voice, I urge all residents to take these precautions seriously. Let’s enjoy the season without underestimating the force of nature right in our backyard. Keep checking the TRCA website and stay safe, Emery.
