Striving to reach a safe harbour: Emery businesses navigate economic uncertainty

By Al Ruggero

As economic turbulence continues to ripple across Canada, the Emery Village Business Improvement Area (BIA) is once again stepping up to support our community through a new wave of uncertainty.

Tariff tensions—fueled by recent policy shifts in the American administration—are having a chilling effect on Canadian industry, especially in manufacturing. Orders bound for the U.S. have slowed significantly, major projects have been postponed, and local construction is stalling. This economic paralysis is not just theoretical—it is already being felt in the daily operations of many local businesses.

The federal government, having secured a renewed mandate, is taking steps to mitigate the impact. However, for many business owners in Emery, the road ahead remains unclear. Now more than ever, we are calling on both federal and provincial leaders to deliver the vision, tools, and support required to navigate this uncertain landscape. It’s also a critical time for community voices to be heard—your ideas and feedback can help shape a meaningful government response.

A recent national survey conducted by Abacus Data for the University of Toronto reveals Canada is standing at a pivotal economic crossroads. While 55% of Canadians remain optimistic about future job opportunities, 45% express doubt—highlighting widespread concern about long-term economic stability. Even more striking, 78% of respondents anticipate serious financial disruption within the next five years.

Yet amid this anxiety, the survey also reflects hope and determination. There is strong public support for forward-thinking investments:

82% believe that without major investment in future-ready industries, Canada risks falling behind globally.

73% support increased funding for emerging sectors, even if it means shifting focus from traditional industries.

78% back greater investment in universities and research institutions to drive innovation and attract global talent.

This echoes the spirit we saw during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Emery Village BIA responded swiftly, launching new communication strategies through our website, newsletters, and social media—amplified by the Emery Village Voice. We became a vital link between businesses and rapidly evolving government programs, ensuring our members stay informed and equipped to weather the crisis.

Now, as we face a different kind of storm, we reaffirm that commitment: to be a strong voice for local businesses, to advocate for their needs, and to connect them with the resources they require. Together, we can navigate these uncertain times—and once again strive toward a safe harbour.
