On Friday, June 13th, the City of Toronto will officially break ground on the long-awaited Western North York Community Centre, and you’re invited to be part of the celebration.
The morning kicks off with an official shovel ceremony, followed by a public reception at 11 a.m. at St. Basil-the-Great Catholic School, hosted in collaboration with school staff, student leaders, the Toronto Catholic District School Board, and the office of Councillor Anthony Perruzza. And Mayor Olivia Chow is expected to attend—an exciting sign of how important this project is to the future of North York.
The new community centre, located at 60 Starview Lane, will replace the existing facility on Weston Road and serve as a vibrant, modern hub for all residents. Since 2019, the City has worked closely with local residents to design a centre that truly reflects the needs of the diverse neighbourhood.
So, what can you expect? This is no ordinary recreation space. The 77,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art facility will feature first-class amenities for people of all ages and interests. Imagine a brand-new swimming pool—perfect for family swims, aquatic fitness, and swimming lessons. Picture a spacious child care centre, making life easier for working parents. Explore the teaching kitchen, where residents can take part in healthy cooking classes. Get inspired in STEM and computer labs, designed to help youth and adults build digital and tech skills for the future. And don’t forget the multi-sport gymnasium, ready to host everything from basketball tournaments to community fitness programs.
Whether you’re a senior looking for programs, a parent with young children, a teen into tech, or just someone hoping to stay active and connected—this centre is being built for you.
Construction begins immediately following the groundbreaking, with the facility expected to open in winter 2028.
Let’s come together to celebrate this historic milestone. Bring your friends, your family, and your community pride. This is your centre, your neighbourhood, your future—let’s break ground together.
The Emery Village Voice will continue to provide updates as construction progresses and key milestones are reached.
