Emery Village BIA Executive Director’s message
As we approach spring and the accumulated snow from two harsh storms finally melts away, we welcome the much-needed March break. In the past, many Canadians would escape to warmer climates, seeking refuge from winter’s worst. However, ongoing tariff uncertainties and trade disputes have put a damper on these travel plans, prompting many to reconsider their destinations. Reports indicate that U.S. tourist hotspots are experiencing a 40 percent decline in business from Canadian visitors. While this may be a setback for cross-border tourism, it presents a valuable opportunity for local economies.
With more Canadians opting to vacation close to home, the hospitality and tourism industry within our borders stands to benefit. This shift in travel behaviour not only supports local attractions but also positively impacts the broader economy. Industries tied to tourism—including bakeries, travel agencies, cleaning services, linen suppliers, printers, tradespeople, advertising agencies, and transportation companies—will all see the ripple effects of increased domestic spending. Right here in Emery Village, businesses play a critical role in ensuring the tourism sector remains vibrant and resilient.
The City of Toronto has announced the availability of funding through the Commercial Façade Improvement Grant. This initiative is designed to assist commercial property owners and tenants in upgrading the appearance of street-facing properties. The program aims to enhance neighbourhood streetscapes and contribute to a more inviting business environment.
Eligible improvements under this grant include masonry work, brick cleaning and restoration, installation of new doors and windows, outdoor decorative or security lighting, enhanced entrances, canopies, awnings, cornices, parapets, wall-mounted signs, and exterior painting. The grant covers 50 percent of eligible costs, up to a maximum of $12,500 for $25,000 worth of improvements, with a minimum qualifying amount of $5,000 in improvements. Additionally, extra funding may be available for accessibility upgrades under AODA requirements.
The application deadline is April 30th, or until the available funding has been fully allocated. As we transition into spring, it’s also important to be mindful of the seasonal challenges that come with the thaw. Melting snow and accumulated winter debris can clog sewer grates, increasing the risk of localized flooding and ice formation. Making the effort to keep these areas clear can go a long way in preventing unnecessary disruptions.
