Celebrating seniors

By Sean Delaney

October 1st marks a special day in our calendars—it’s National Seniors Day in Canada. It’s a day set aside to honour and celebrate the older adults in our communities, recognizing their invaluable contributions to our lives and society. Here in Emery, our seniors are not just residents, they are the pillars of our community, whose wisdom and experiences have helped shape the neighbourhood we cherish today.

Our seniors have built, supported, and guided us. They’ve been our teachers, our mentors, and our friends. They’ve contributed to our community with their knowledge, their hard work, and their love. They are grandparents, friends, and neighbours who enrich our lives every day with stories from the past and lessons for the future.

Why is it so important to celebrate our seniors? Because acknowledging their contributions helps bridge the generation gap and fosters an appreciation for the rich history and experiences they share. Celebrating them reminds us all of the valuable roles they continue to play in enriching our community fabric.

So, how can we show our appreciation? Small gestures can make a big difference. Consider visiting a senior who may be alone, bringing them a meal, or simply spending time listening to their stories. A simple phone call, a handwritten note, or a walk in the park can brighten their day and show them they are not forgotten but deeply valued.

Let’s take this opportunity to thank our seniors for all they have done and continue to do. Please take a moment this October 1st to celebrate the seniors in Emery, whether it’s by attending organized community events or by creating your own special way to say thank you.

In Emery, let’s turn National Seniors Day into more than just a day on the calendar; let’s make it a lively celebration of respect, gratitude, and love. After all, our seniors don’t just deserve our appreciation—they deserve to feel truly celebrated.
