Crime Prevention with Community Police Officer Deanne Taylor
Community Police Officer (CPO) Deanne Taylor has been part of 31 Division for more than six years and stepped into her new role as a Crime Prevention Officer in April 2025. Based out of 40 Norfinch Drive, Deanne works closely with residents and businesses in Emery Village to build stronger, safer communities.
So, what does a Crime Prevention Officer do? The job combines education, outreach, and analysis. Officers like Deanne study crime data to identify risks, run presentations on personal safety, and work with residents, schools, and businesses on practical ways to reduce crime. This includes safety audits for homes and businesses, as well as partnerships with the City of Toronto and other community groups.
Right now, Deanne wants neighbours to be aware of distraction thefts that are occurring across 31 Division. A distraction theft happens when a thief diverts someone’s attention in order to steal valuables such as wallets, purses, phones, or jewelry. These crimes often involve more than one person working together.
How do distraction thefts happen?
Offenders create a diversion. Common tactics include:
- Asking for directions
- Spilling something on the victim
- Pretending to pray with the victim
How can you protect yourself?
Stay alert and maintain personal space. Don’t allow strangers to get close enough to hug or shake your hand. Keep your belongings zipped, secure, and close to your body. Be cautious when approached by anyone whose behaviour seems unusual or overly engaging.
“Always maintain your personal space. Do not let others get close enough to hug or shake your hand.”
And remember, if you see something suspicious or are a victim of crime, report it to police right away.
