Major milestone for Finch West LRT:

By Sean Delaney

Exciting news for commuters in Emery Village and beyond—the Finch West Light Rail Transit (LRT) project has officially completed construction on all stations and stops along its route. This pivotal development brings it one step closer to the operational launch of a transit project that promises to transform daily commutes.

The Finch West LRT, spanning 11 kilometres with 18 stops, is not just about reducing travel time, it’s about enhancing connectivity across northwest Toronto. As testing and commissioning enter their final stages, the anticipation for the first ride grows. These tests are crucial for ensuring the safety and reliability of the service before it welcomes passengers.

The new line will serve as a vital link between local and regional transit systems, seamlessly connecting the TTC, GO Transit, Mississauga’s MiWay, York Region Viva, and Brampton Züm services. Notably, Finch West Station—one of the two underground stations—will provide a direct connection to the TTC’s Line 1, significantly enhancing access to Toronto’s broader transit network.

Imagine boarding a state-of-the-art, zero-emission light rail vehicle at Finch West Station and travelling up to 60 kilometres per hour toward Humber College Station. During peak hours, trains will run every five to seven minutes, ensuring that whether you’re an early bird or a night owl, the LRT is ready when you are.

The benefits of this project extend beyond quick travel times. The LRT’s integration with Ontario’s One Fare program will allow for seamless, cost-effective transfers between different transit systems, simplifying commutes and reducing overall travel costs.

Moreover, the Finch West LRT incorporates cutting-edge infrastructure improvements, including new fibre-optic cabling to enhance local internet speeds and an innovative water management system to mitigate flooding—a smart move for our Canadian climate.

With the major construction phase complete, the focus now shifts to rigorous testing to ensure that every component of the LRT meets the highest standards of safety and efficiency. The community’s excitement is palpable as the finish line approaches.

Stay tuned, Emery Village. The Finch West LRT is set to redefine urban transit in the community, bringing faster, more reliable, and eco-friendly transportation options to our doorstep. It’s not just waiting for a new train service, it’s gearing up for a transformation that will ripple through every aspect of daily lives and the local economy. Keep an eye out for the official launch date, and get ready to enjoy a smoother, greener commute.
