February- Heart Health Month

By Sean Delaney

February is not just the month of love and romance, it’s also Heart Month in Canada—a crucial

time dedicated to raising awareness about cardiovascular health. During this special month, we

are reminded of the importance of taking care of our hearts, which are vital to our overall well-

being.

Heart disease remains one of the leading causes of death nationwide, but it’s also one of the

most preventable. This February, take a moment to consider your heart health and how you can

improve it. Simple lifestyle changes can make a significant difference. Start with your diet:

incorporate heart-healthy foods like leafy greens, whole grains, and fatty fish rich in omega-3

fatty acids. Avoid trans fats and high sodium levels that can contribute to heart complications.

Physical activity is another cornerstone of heart health. Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate

aerobic exercise, such as brisk walking or cycling, each week. Exercise helps maintain a

healthy weight, lowers blood pressure, and strengthens your heart.

Don’t forget to manage stress, as it can have a direct impact on your heart. Techniques such as

deep breathing, yoga, or simply engaging in hobbies you love can reduce stress levels.

Lastly, if you smoke, seek support to quit. Smoking is a major risk factor for heart disease, and

quitting is one of the best things you can do for your heart.

This Heart Month let’s take these steps to heart. Remember, small changes can lead to a

lifetime of health. Take action today for a healthier tomorrow.
