Councillor’s Corner - January 2025

Dear Resident,

I’d like to wish you all a very happy New Year, and a blessed and prosperous 2025. Also,

wishing a happy Chanukkah, and Lunar New Year to those who are celebrating this month.

As your Councillor, it is a pleasure to wish you all a happy, safe and blessed New Year. Also, for

those celebrating, a happy Chanukkah and Lunar New Year.

On January 8th, I had the chance to speak at the Toronto Preservation Board, to the cultural

heritage value of 3100 Weston Road (the former St-Basil-the-Great College School.) While

Rivermede House was recommended for designation under the Ontario Heritage Act, sadly the

former school, Chapel and pool were not included in the report. These elements have profound

historical value, as generations of lives were shaped at the school and countless individuals

have found solace in the peace and beauty of the Marian Shrine. I strongly believe these

features should be preserved for their cultural and historical significance.

The Preservation Board has recommended that City Council do a thorough examination of the

entire site. I am grateful for this progress and the work of staff in cataloguing the history of this

remarkable site. I am hopeful that my Council colleagues will agree with this recommendation,

and we can provide this vulnerable site some of the protection it has long deserved.

Also, I recently had a chance to take a tour behind the scenes of Pearson Airport’s operations.

Pearson Airport is a cornerstone of Toronto’s Northwest region, moving an incredible amount of

people and goods. Staff here do an incredible job of responding to and communicating

information. Thank you Greater Toronto Airports Authority staff for letting me take a peek into

the wide world of aviation.
