Executive Director’s Message-Jan 2015

To all the employees and friends in Emery Village,

The end of the holiday season can only mean one thing- the start of a New Year.

The cold January air cradles an aura of anticipation, and nervousness. We set resolutions for the upcoming 12 months, listing everything we want to accomplish, and we always plan on repeating the successes from the past year.

The same thing goes on at the BIA, we assess our strengths and weaknesses to evolve into an association that better serves our community and business members.

We approached this year with trepidation after witnessing many retail closures throughout Canada – including Sears and Jacob Connection.

Recently we all learned that Target would also be closing down, after being open less than two years in Canada. The Target closures alone will result in 17,600 job losses. A sad reality for those who rely on the retail giant.

To put this in perspective, our business members currently employ more than 25,000 people.

This just emphasizes the importance of shopping local in order to preserve our neighbourhood businesses and jobs.

Last year we introduced the Emery Village Rewards Prepaid Card, because a key role for the BIA is to encourage the residents in our community to shop locally in an effort to help businesses prosper.

While we are working on replicating some of our other successes from the past year – such as the Movie in the Park and Community Festivals – we are also looking forward to making improvements not just in our event planning but also on how to communicate with our community and business members.

On behalf of the Board of Management & Staff at Emery Village BIA, we wish everyone a Healthy & Prosperous 2015.
