Residents pack Carmine Stefano Community Centre

By Sean Delaney

A large and passionate crowd filled the Carmine Stefano Community Centre on February 26 for a public meeting hosted by the City of Toronto Planning Department regarding a proposed development at 3100 Weston Road.

City staff opened the meeting by outlining the planning process and explaining that the proposal is still in the review stage. Residents then heard from the applicant’s planning representative, who explained that the current application focuses on a portion of the site and proposes three four-storey residential buildings with a total of approximately 125 stacked townhouse units.

Several residents raised concerns during the evening, including questions about traffic impacts, road access, floodplain issues, and how future development in the area might affect existing neighbourhood infrastructure. Others spoke about the history of the site and the importance of protecting heritage features on the property.

There were also questions about how the planning process works and how the City evaluates studies submitted by developers. City staff explained that proposals must be reviewed against provincial planning policy, the City’s Official Plan, and a number of supporting studies such as transportation and engineering reports.

One of the key issues discussed during the meeting was the fact that the developer has filed an appeal to the Ontario Land Tribunal after City Council did not make a decision within the required timeline. If the matter continues through that process, it could shift the discussion away from the traditional municipal planning route and into a more formal legal review.

Toward the end of the meeting, Councillor Anthony Perruzza spoke passionately about the need for the community to remain engaged in the process. He encouraged residents to stay involved so their concerns can continue to be heard as the proposal moves forward.

As part of that effort, Councillor Perruzza has scheduled a follow-up community meeting so residents can continue to share feedback and better understand the next steps in the planning process.
