The COVID-19 pandemic has brought on many challenges for a variety of industries, including the restaurant industry. Whether it is the prohibition of indoor dining or implementing new health protocols, restaurants have had to adapt to the changes brought on by COVID-19. Many restaurants and bars have had to permanently close during this time.
Rajendra Ramrattan, owner of De Karibbean King Roti Shop & Bakery Take Out & Catering, says the pandemic has left no choice for everyone but to adapt. Ramrattan says the changes have been difficult because there are bills to look out for, including rent for the restaurant space. He said he is thankful for his regular customers who have kept visiting the restaurant. Ramrattan shares how he has felt during this time.
“As a small business owner, most of the time you have to keep on a strong face,” he said. “You’re pretending everything is all right.”
Ramrattan adds that good property spaces have put up “for lease” signs because many small businesses including restaurants have had to close up. It is because of that reason Ramrattan said it is important to support your local businesses.
Similar to Ramrattan, Mohan Theivendram, is the owner of a local restaurant, New York Fried Chicken. Theivendram said he has faced tough challenges including laying off staff due to the hurdles brought on by the pandemic. Theivendram said he has lost about 75 percent of his business and said that the losses have affected him immensely. Theivendram too reiterated the importance of residents supporting local businesses.
“Even if 10 people come into my restaurant daily, it helps me a lot,” said Theivendram.
