Publisher’s note-Nov 2014

I was a bit taken back last month when I heard there was a local resident taking issue at the amount of BIA owned Canadian Flags that had been installed on Arrow road. In fact there seemed to be some issue with how many of the flags were installed and are maintained by the BIA throughout Emery Village. I felt these were petty comments and likely political in nature. The Emery Village Voice does not dabble in politics and we operate with the mantra that we are a “Feel Good” newspaper and only highlight what blessings we have in this beautiful 21 square kilometres we call Emery Village.

Here is my take. We have a National Flag act of Canada. The purpose of this enactment is to ensure that all Canadians are encouraged to display the National Flag of Canada. Why?

-Whereas the Canadian flag is the symbol of the nation’s unity.

-Whereas the Canadian flag represents the principles of freedom, democracy, courage, and justice upon which our great nation is based.

-Whereas the Canadian flag represents all the citizens of Canada.

-Whereas the Canadian flag represents pride in our great nation and support for those who have sacrificed their lives for it.

The residents of Emery Village have always been overly patriotic in nature. It’s in our DNA.

The BIA actually maintains more than 50 Canadian flags and flag poles in Emery Village. You will see the flags lowered at important occasions throughout the year – including a death in the military or the civilian police force and of course, November 11 - Remembrance Day.

Rest in peace Cpl. Nathan Cirillo!

I say more flags and less gum flapping!
