In the heart of Emery Village, Jason DeFrancesca shines as a true community hero. A recent graduate of St. Basil-the-Great College School, DeFrancesca has made an incredible impact through his volunteer work and dedication to helping others.
DeFrancesca’s story began humbly. He wasn’t always familiar with his neighbours but joining the Business Improvement Area (BIA) changed that. He started small, shoveling driveways for local seniors in the winter and mowing lawns in the warmer months. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he took it further, distributing vaccine information flyers door-to-door. His efforts earned him an award from MPP Tom Rakocevic at a “Movie in the Park” event.
For DeFrancesca what started as a requirement for 40 volunteer hours to graduate quickly became a lifelong passion. Under the guidance of Trustee Ida Lardi, DeFrancesca’s volunteer hours skyrocketed to an impressive 1,650. He worked alongside Mike Varelli, distributing flyers for local food drives during Thanksgiving and Christmas, helping ensure no one in the community went hungry.
Now, he has graduated and is diving into an apprenticeship program to become an electrician and the entire village is cheering him on as he embarks on this new journey.
DeFrancesca’s volunteerism is more than just hours logged, it’s about the connections he’s made and the lives he’s touched. He started a team of students at his school to get involved in community projects, fostering a sense of unity and purpose among his peers. His door-to-door efforts not only provided immediate help but also built a stronger, more supportive neighbourhood.
Reflecting on his journey, DeFrancesca credits his teachers, Mr. Altomari and Mrs. Montesano, for inspiring him and giving him the confidence to achieve his goals.
“What drives me is the joy of seeing the positive impact we can make in people’s lives. It’s not just about the hours we put in, but the connections we build and the hope we bring to our community,” he said.
As DeFrancesca steps into his future, the Emery Village community stands behind him, grateful for his contributions and excited to see what he accomplishes next.
His journey reminds us all of the power of community spirit and the difference one person can make.
