Attention Emery Village residents, the City of Toronto and the TRCA have issued a flood alert due to the unusually wet summer. This season has been the wettest on record, likely due to climate change. With the heavy rains, the risk of flooding is higher, especially near the Humber River.
Flooded roads are a significant concern. Heavy rains can make driving dangerous. Avoid driving through flooded streets, as even a tiny amount of water can cause you to lose control of your vehicle. If you see water on the road, it’s best to turn around and find another route.
Basement flooding is another issue many residents might face. Make sure your drainage systems are clear of debris and consider installing a sump pump. Move essential items to higher ground to prevent water damage.
Children’s safety is paramount, especially near the Humber River. Rising water levels can make the riverbanks slippery and dangerous. Keep kids away from floodwaters and fast-moving streams to ensure they stay safe.
Stay informed by signing up for flood alerts from the TRCA and keeping an eye on local weather updates. This will help you stay ahead of any potential flooding. Prepare an emergency kit with water, food, medications, and important documents, and keep it handy in case you need to evacuate quickly.
Have an evacuation plan in place. Know the safest routes to higher ground and ensure your family knows the plan. If flooding starts, move to higher ground immediately. Avoid walking or driving through floodwaters and use a battery-powered radio to stay updated if the power goes out.
The TRCA and the City of Toronto actively monitor the situation and will provide updates as needed. Visit their websites for real-time information and safety tips.
By staying prepared and informed, we can help protect our families and homes from the risks of flooding this summer. Stay safe, Emery Village. For more information and updates, visit the TRCA and City of Toronto websites.
