Executive Director's Message - Aug 2019

Summer 2019 has flown with a blink of an eye and now preparation begins to get ready and set to start a new year of school.

Let your kids know that feeling a little scared or nervous on the first day is pretty normal because of all the new things they may encounter. They may meet new friends, new teachers and maybe even have a new school. Preparing school supplies can always be a great pick-me-up. It can be fun to see what can still be used from the year before and maybe, getting something new.

Before summer is over, families can participate in some great outdoor fun by walking or bike riding in the beautiful weather on the Humber River Trails that are celebrating a 20 year anniversary. In 1999, the Humber River was officially designated under the Canadian Heritage Rivers System (CHRS) for its significant cultural and recreational value, thanks to the collaborative efforts of Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA), the Humber Heritage Community, and dedicated community members. Visit the TRCA site to read more about the anniversary.

A couple of safety tips can help keep your child safe. Encourage them to become aware of their surroundings to and from school; refresh them on road safety and go over emergency tips with them like the dangers of talking to strangers and keeping their eyes open so that they return home safely every day. Taking a quick trip to the school either by car or on foot and highlighting areas that may be problematic will have them prepared for life. Also remember to be cautious of children at drop off/pick up points which can get chaotic with school buses and vehicle congestion.

Keeping kids busy throughout the winter months is a must.

Check out all that our area offers and register them in a program that will keep them active, social and happy. For ideas please visit: www.toronto.ca/data/parks/funguide/listings.html#age=&barcodes=&district=all&kw=&view=

On a final note, let’s enjoy the rest of this beautiful weather and make some more memories.
