After a lengthy pandemic pause, another season of the Emery senior’s art class and social gathering is underway. Each Wednesday, a group of seniors get together to develop their art skills under the instruction of Lucy Catania for painting and Lee Jackson for knitting. The class is affectionately known as, “The Lucy and Lee Drop-In Centre.”
Some of the members are new to painting and beginning to hone their skills. Some have been attending these classes for a long time and have developed considerable artistic talents. But one of the most essential benefits of the class is the social connection. Catania said everyone was happy to get out of lockdown and get out of their houses and see each other again after such a long period. Staying safe is very important.
“We are all fully vaccinated, and we pay attention to all health protocols,” she said.
MPP Tom Rakocevic recently dropped by to say hello.
“It’s great to see the Lucy and Lee Multi-Arts Walk-In back together at Carmine Stefano Community Centre. Art has been such an important way to get people through the feelings of isolation during the pandemic. However, the social and creative aspects of making art together can’t be beaten. When I drop in, I’m always impressed with the different creations underway and the friendship and encouragement everyone gives. Art is a source of lifelong joy, healing and expression for many, and I’m always thrilled to see someone new pick up that paintbrush or other instrument of art for the first time.”
The current session will end mid-December, taking a short break for the holiday season. Everyone hopes that with the current relaxation of restrictions, art classes should resume this January. Stay tuned.
