Councillor’s Corner-Nov 2015

Dear Friends,

As the fall weather is winding down and the first signs of snow are upon us, I hope you are all ready to embrace the winter season in our wonderful community. Given that we are now entering the winter season, and with it usually comes celebration, I would like to take this opportunity to celebrate the successful visit from Mayor John Tory to our beautiful community this past month.

On November 13th, Mayor Tory accepted my invitation to come visit me and have an opportunity to observe the great things taking place in Ward 7 and to visit the wonderful people that make our community so strong. What better way to start a tour than by having coffee and cookies with some of the wonderful seniors groups in our community. Following a productive discussion with our community’s senior groups about services and programs for all seniors in Ward 7, I then took our Mayor to see the wonderful growth happening in Ward 7, like the future site of the Emery Village Casa community at the heart of Emery village at Finch Ave and Weston Rd.

From there I decided to give our Mayor an opportunity to witness the impact an LRT would have along the Finch corridor and what I am doing to make sure that our great community doesn’t get left out and has a voice. In doing this I took the opportunity to have Mayor Tory visit our amazing Emery Village BIA where a fantastic discussion took place between the Mayor and local business owners about the impact and concerns an LRT will bring to the biggest industrial pocket in the country.

After a very promising meeting with the Emery Village BIA, I decided to treat the Mayor and show him not only a historic site in Ward 7, but perhaps one of the oldest Red Oak Trees in Canada. By seeing this amazing tree in person, I expressed my view of the city’s responsibility to do everything it can to preserve this 350 year-old heritage site. I felt it also necessary to give him the opportunity to visit some of the great local businesses that have made our community so strong.

One of those visits was to the grand opening of a newly renovated Globe Meats, where the Mayor and I had the honour of participating in the ribbon cutting ceremony. After a quick tour and a delicious slice of pizza, we then visited Metal Creations Inc., one of our community’s successful businesses, now into its 25th year of operating in Ward 7. After a quick tour, both myself and Mayor Tory had the pleasure of learning and participating in spot-welding with some of the wonderful employees.

Finally, our tour ended with a visit to our local North-Islington senior’s group, where both the Mayor and I were greeted by some of the wonderful residents that live in Ward 7. Both the Mayor and I also had the opportunity to listen to concerns and questions from many of you, our wonderful residents, on issues that are affecting you and our community as a whole. Following our wonderful discussion it was then time for the Mayor to depart Ward 7, but not without some lunch.

I would like to express my appreciation to Mayor John Tory for being the first Mayor to accept an invitation to tour Ward 7, especially in the 25 years that I have represented our great community.

This successful visit allowed our Mayor to witness the wonderful things happening in Ward 7 and visit the people that make our community such a strong and fantastic place to live.

Ward 7 Councillor
