The deep freeze of this past winter is lifting and it’s time for spring. It’s definitely time to be revived with new growth. Revitalizing Ward 7 has always been a focus of mine and that has been fostered through continued growth and development in our community.
One such development in Ward 7 raises a lot of questions and sometimes a little gossip - the development at Finch and Weston Rd. People ask me “will it be condos or housing? Someone told me it’s going to be social housing.”
You tell me in hushed tones that someone told your neighbor’s cousin that I might have allowed a social housing project to be built there and ask me why I chose to do so? The answer is clearly that I didn’t. The construction you see taking place at the South-East corner of Finch and Weston Rd. are buildings that are both for residential and commercial use including 1400 residential units. There will be a certain amount of space dedicated to some of the many retired Carabinieri, or special military police officers from Italy, who have settled in Ward 7. And while the residential aspect is the focus of the development, it will also include a beautiful piazza for everyone to enjoy along with space for commercial units that include both shops and restaurants along with larger sidewalks to accommodate our growing village. This all means more than just having businesses and jobs; we can now finally be able to shop in our own community which is a much wanted change. The Casa development is neither a “social housing building” nor will it ever be. Construction will take place in 3 Phases - Phase 1 will be the first two residential towers which has already begun construction. The new buildings and piazza at Finch and Weston Road will be the heart of the Village that we are establishing in Ward 7 and the start of a brand new phase of our own as we grow towards being a place new families are proud to call their home.
