Councillor’s Corner
Dear Resident,
This past month, our community has collectively come together to protect the Marian Shrine of Gratitude located at 3100 Weston Rd. The former owners, the Basilian Fathers, sold the property to a developer, and the City was only advised of the sale days before it happened. However, the City is still a tenant of the owners and leases a portion of the property, including the Carmine Stefano Community Centre, parking lot and soccer fields.
To protect the Marian Shrine of Gratitude and the historic buildings at 3100 Weston Rd from being lost in a future redevelopment. I presented a motion to City Council earlier this month for City staff to consider the whole property for a heritage designation. If approved, a heritage designation for 3100 Weston Rd would protect its landmarks, such as Carmine Stefano Community Centre, Rivermede House, and the Marian Shrine of Gratitude, from being taken down.
The motion received unanimous support from the Mayor and City Councillors at Council. This is a great first step to the site receiving a heritage designation. Currently, the City’s Heritage Division is prioritizing the evaluation of the property and preparing a report outlining the entire property’s heritage value.

I will continue to advocate for the shrine and all elements of the site by communicating with various stakeholders, including the dedicated advocates for the shrine, City Staff, the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority and the new owner.
